The Crow’s Nest at Barton Marina

As a Nottingham-based wedding photographer, I’m lucky enough to explore beautiful venues all over the Midlands – and one of my absolute favourites has to be The Crow’s Nest at Barton Marina. I’ve photographed several weddings here and it’s always a pleasure.

It’s easy to see why so many couples choose The Crow’s Nest for their big day. Overlooking the picturesque marina in the heart of Staffordshire, the venue offers stunning waterside views, relaxed vibes, and a lovely terrace that’s perfect for guests to enjoy throughout the day. The interior has a modern rustic charm, and the whole place has such a warm, intimate feel ideal for both small celebrations and bigger wedding parties.

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a half-day wedding here.

The day began with a first look between the bride and her father. We got ourselves into position, hiding in the doorway, as it had been raining non-stop all morning and early afternoon. But as if on cue, the rain stopped the moment the bride arrived. Honestly, I couldn’t have timed it better myself.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds sneaked off for a celebratory drink together while I helped gather guests for the confetti shot. I loved how chilled the atmosphere was. Guests were handed confetti and sunglasses .

The couple had told me early on that they wanted their photos to feel natural and relaxed, with plenty of time to actually enjoy their wedding day with their loved ones. I’m a huge believer in that approach.

We quickly did a few family group photos in front of the boats. A classic spot at Barton Marina with the canal boats providing a lovely backdrop and then came a personal highlight of the day for me...

Their dog arrived!

As a massive dog person, I’m always thrilled when couples include their pets in their wedding photos. We grabbed a few quick portraits with the pup.

Later in the day, I whisked the couple off for a short portrait session around the marina. Because they live nearby and often walk around Barton Marina, it felt especially meaningful to capture their portraits somewhere they already have a strong connection to.

We kept the shoot natural and low-key, making the most of the soft evening light, quiet footpaths, and lovely views over the water.

While we were away, the guests were relaxing out on the terrace, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying drinks.

When we got back, I headed into the wedding breakfast room to grab a few detail shots. The timing worked out perfectly, as I managed to capture the couple’s reaction to seeing the room for the first time.

Even though I was booked on my half-day wedding photography package, the ceremony was a little later in the afternoon, which meant I stayed to cover speeches, a few photos of the evening guests arriving, and of course some very lively dance floor action.
