Wedding Photographer Lichfield

Looking for a wedding photographer in Lichfield who will capture your day naturally, without turning the whole thing into a photoshoot?

I'm Thom, a professional wedding photographer based in Nottingham, and I've been photographing weddings for almost ten years. Lichfield is somewhere I've returned to for weddings on numerous occasions, particularly at the beautiful Lichfield Registry Office, and it's a city I've really enjoyed getting to know through my photography.

My approach is simple. I want you to enjoy your wedding while I capture everything happening around you. The laughter, excitement, nervous moments, happy tears and all the little things you might not even notice at the time.

Around 95% of my wedding photography is documentary, meaning I photograph moments as they happen rather than constantly directing people or asking for poses. Of course, I'm also happy to organise family photographs and help with some relaxed couple portraits, but I don't believe you should have to spend hours away from your guests to get beautiful wedding photographs.

Whether you're planning a small ceremony at Lichfield Registration Office, a celebration in the city centre or a full wedding day somewhere in the surrounding Staffordshire countryside, I'd love to hear about your plans.

My Lichfield wedding photography packages start at £350 for two hours, with half-day and full-day coverage also available.

Wedding Photography in Lichfield – A City I Know Well

Lichfield is a lovely setting for a wedding, especially if you enjoy historic buildings, beautiful architecture and green spaces.

One of my favourite things about photographing weddings here is how much variety there is within a relatively compact city centre. You can go from a historic street with Lichfield Cathedral in the background to somewhere full of trees and greenery without needing to spend ages travelling between locations.

I've photographed several weddings at Lichfield Registry Office, including smaller ceremonies where the couple only wanted a couple of hours of coverage. These weddings are a great example of why you don't necessarily need a huge venue or a full day of photography to come away with a wonderful collection of images.

I've photographed couples around the cathedral, through the surrounding streets, in Beacon Park and in the gardens near the Registry Office. Each location offers something different, and I enjoy finding a good balance between natural portraits and photographs that really show off where the wedding took place.

I particularly like the contrast between the cathedral's dramatic architecture and the greenery around Beacon Park. It's one of the reasons I enjoy photographing weddings in Lichfield so much.

Although I'm based in Nottingham rather than Lichfield itself, it's an area I know through photographing real weddings, and I'm always happy to return.

My Wedding Photography Style – Natural, Documentary and Full of Colour

There are lots of different styles of wedding photography, and choosing the right one is really important.

My approach is mostly documentary, which means I spend the majority of the day observing rather than directing. I want to capture your wedding as it actually happened, rather than create a series of photographs that look as though they've all been carefully staged.

Weddings are full of moments that can't be repeated. It might be the look on someone's face when they first see the bride, friends laughing together during the drinks reception, children doing something unexpected or the reactions during a particularly emotional speech.

These are often the photographs that become favourites because they show the personalities of the people who were there.

Relaxed Wedding Photography Without Awkward Posing

I look for real moments rather than constant posed photographs.

One of the things couples regularly tell me is that they aren't particularly comfortable having their photograph taken.

I completely understand that. Most people aren't used to standing in front of a camera, especially with an audience watching.

Fortunately, you don't need to be good at posing to get great wedding photographs.

For couple portraits, I generally prefer to take a short walk with you and find a few interesting locations. You'll spend most of the time walking, talking and enjoying a little time together, while I photograph things naturally.

I'll offer guidance if it's helpful, but I'm not going to ask you to hold an uncomfortable pose for ages or repeat something until it looks perfect.

The aim is to make the photography part of the day enjoyable rather than something you feel you have to get through.

Colourful Wedding Photography

My editing style is another important part of my work.

I like photographs with natural skin tones, rich colours and a genuine sense of atmosphere. I don't want every wedding to look washed out or heavily filtered, and I want the colours you've chosen for your day to be reflected in the finished images.

If you've spent time choosing flowers, decorations, outfits and a venue, those details deserve to be captured properly.

I also appreciate that wedding photographs need to look good in different lighting conditions, from bright summer afternoons to dark winter ceremonies and evening celebrations.

Over the years, I've photographed weddings in pretty much every kind of British weather, so I'm comfortable adapting when things don't go exactly to plan.

Lichfield Wedding Venues and Locations

Lichfield has a good mixture of places to get married, from small civil ceremonies to more traditional wedding celebrations.

My most extensive experience in the city is at Lichfield Registration Office, although I'm equally happy to photograph weddings at other venues in Lichfield and the surrounding area.

Lichfield Registry Office Weddings

Lichfield Registration Office, often called Lichfield Registry Office, is located in the Old Library Building on Bird Street.

I've photographed numerous ceremonies here, and it's a venue I particularly enjoy.

The ceremonies tend to suit my natural photography style very well. There's often a relaxed atmosphere, particularly at smaller weddings, and the location makes it possible to capture a good variety of photographs without needing to travel very far.

I normally begin by photographing the couple or guests arriving, along with the anticipation before the ceremony. During the ceremony itself, I work discreetly and follow the registrar's photography guidance, concentrating on the important moments and people's reactions.

Afterwards, there's usually an opportunity for congratulations, family photographs, confetti where permitted and a short portrait session in the surrounding area.

One of the biggest advantages of a Lichfield Registry Office wedding is that there are some excellent locations for photographs nearby, particularly the Garden of Remembrance, Beacon Park and the streets around Lichfield Cathedral.

If you're considering a ceremony here, I've written a separate Lichfield Registry Office wedding photography guide covering the venue, photography locations and what to expect.

Other Wedding Venues in Lichfield

Lichfield isn't just about registry office weddings.

The city also has venues such as Lichfield Guildhall, with its historic interior and civil ceremony rooms, and The George Hotel, which offers ceremonies and wedding receptions in the city centre.

Both are worth considering if you're looking for a wedding venue with plenty of character and easy access to the historic centre.

There are also wedding venues throughout the wider Lichfield and Staffordshire area, including countryside settings where the landscape becomes part of the wedding photographs.

My experience photographing weddings isn't limited to one type of venue. I've photographed ceremonies in registry offices, large country houses, hotels, gardens and smaller, more unusual locations.

If you're getting married somewhere I haven't photographed before, that's absolutely fine. I'll familiarise myself with the venue and its surroundings so I'm prepared for the day.

The Best Places for Wedding Photos in Lichfield

One of the things I enjoy most about wedding photography in Lichfield is the number of different backdrops available.

These are some locations I've used or particularly like when photographing couples around the city.

Lichfield Cathedral and The Close

Lichfield Cathedral is probably the city's most recognisable landmark, and it's easy to see why so many couples want a photograph with it in the background.

The three spires make a spectacular backdrop, but I actually think some of the best photographs come from the streets and viewpoints around the cathedral rather than simply standing directly in front of it.

The view along The Close is a particular favourite of mine.

I like including the historic buildings, streets and architecture because it gives the photographs a real sense of place.

It's also possible to capture some lovely, more natural portraits by walking together through the area rather than standing still for every photograph.

Beacon Park

For couples who prefer greenery to historic architecture, Beacon Park offers something completely different.

The park has tree-lined paths, open spaces, gardens and views around the water. It can provide a lovely setting for relaxed wedding portraits, particularly during the warmer months when everything is green.

I've used the park for Lichfield wedding photographs, and it's especially useful if couples want a quieter setting away from the busy streets.

It's worth allowing a little extra time if you'd like to explore further into the park, rather than trying to squeeze everything into a very short portrait session.

The Garden of Remembrance

The Garden of Remembrance is another location I frequently use for photographs following Lichfield Registry Office weddings.

One of its biggest advantages is that it's convenient for couples getting married nearby. It has greenery, interesting features and a slightly more enclosed feel than some of the larger public spaces.

For shorter wedding photography bookings, this can be particularly useful. You don't have to spend lots of your limited time travelling between locations to get a variety of photographs.

In many cases, I prefer to photograph the family groups nearby and then spend a little longer exploring with the couple.

Lichfield's Historic Streets

Lichfield’s streets offer plenty of character for relaxed photographs.

Not every wedding photograph needs a grand backdrop.

Some of my favourite images are made on ordinary streets, with interesting buildings, doorways or beautiful natural light.

Lichfield's historic centre has plenty of character, and taking a short walk through the streets can produce photographs that feel much more spontaneous than a traditional posed photoshoot.

Of course, exactly where we go depends on your venue, the weather, how much time you've booked and what kind of photographs you prefer.

I always think it's better to choose a few good locations and enjoy the experience rather than rush around trying to photograph everything.

Small and Intimate Wedding Photography in Lichfield

Not every wedding needs ten hours of photography.

I've photographed plenty of smaller weddings over the years, and I think they can be just as enjoyable to capture as much larger celebrations.

A small wedding might mean just a handful of guests at the Registry Office, a short ceremony followed by a meal with family, or a simple celebration without all the traditional wedding-day formalities.

Whatever you're planning, you should still be able to have professional photographs that tell the story.

My two-hour wedding photography package has been particularly popular for smaller ceremonies because it covers the important parts of the day without requiring couples to book photography for longer than they need.

What Can Be Photographed in Two Hours?

A short booking can still include plenty of memorable moments.
Wedding party gathered in front of Lichfield Cathedral

You might be surprised by how much can be captured during a two-hour Lichfield wedding.

Depending on the ceremony timing and locations, a typical booking might include:

  • Before the ceremony: Guests arriving, venue details, the atmosphere and some of those nervous or excited moments.
  • The ceremony: The entrance, vows, ring exchange, reactions and all the important moments I'm permitted to photograph.
  • Immediately afterwards: Congratulations, hugs, candid guest photographs and confetti if the venue allows it.
  • Family photographs: A selection of group photographs with the people who matter most to you.
  • Couple portraits: Some relaxed photographs together in the gardens, near the cathedral or around the city centre.

The timings will always depend on your plans, and I wouldn't recommend trying to visit too many separate locations in such a short booking.

The most important thing is that you're able to enjoy your wedding while still getting photographs you'll be happy with.

Why Choose Me as Your Lichfield Wedding Photographer?

There are plenty of wedding photographers working around Lichfield and Staffordshire, so I think it's important to explain what you're actually getting when you book me.

Almost Ten Years of Wedding Photography Experience

I've been photographing weddings for almost a decade, from small registry office ceremonies to full celebrations with large numbers of guests.

That experience is useful for much more than operating a camera.

It means understanding how wedding days tend to unfold, anticipating moments before they happen and knowing how to adapt when timings change.

Weddings rarely run exactly to schedule, and that's part of the fun. I'm comfortable working around the unexpected without making it your problem.

Real Experience Photographing Weddings in Lichfield

I'm not creating this page simply because Lichfield is another place on a map.

I've photographed real weddings here, know some of the best areas for portraits and have experience working at Lichfield Registry Office.

You can see examples of my photographs from the city on my website rather than having to take my word for it.

Natural Photographs With Minimal Interruption

Most of the time, you won't need to think about me.

I'll be looking for genuine moments between you and your guests, while keeping the day as relaxed as possible.

I'll step in when it's time for family photographs or when a little direction would help, but I'm not interested in taking over your wedding.

Professional Equipment and Backups

I work with two cameras throughout the wedding day, with backup equipment ready if something goes wrong.

My cameras use dual memory card slots, and I take multiple backups of your photographs after the wedding, including cloud storage.

I know how important wedding photographs are because these are moments that can't simply be repeated.

Straightforward Pricing

I don't believe every couple needs the most expensive package.

If you're having a small Lichfield wedding and two hours of photography will cover everything you want, I'll happily recommend that rather than try to convince you to book all day.

Likewise, if you've planned a bigger celebration, we can look at how much coverage would genuinely be useful.

Planning Your Wedding Photography in Lichfield

Once you've chosen your venue, one of the most useful things to do is work out roughly how you'd like the day to unfold.

You don't need to have everything planned down to the minute, but knowing when the ceremony starts, where you'll be going afterwards and whether you'd like family photographs makes it much easier to plan the photography.

How Much Time Should We Allow for Couple Photographs?

For most weddings, I find that 15 to 30 minutes can be enough for a relaxed set of couple portraits, particularly when there are good locations nearby.

You can certainly spend longer if photography is an important part of your plans, but I don't think couples should feel obliged to disappear for an hour just because they've booked a professional photographer.

For a Lichfield city centre wedding, a short walk can provide plenty of variety.

When Should We Take Family Photographs?

I normally recommend taking family group photographs shortly after the ceremony, once everyone is together.

Having a short list of the groups you'd like photographed helps enormously. It means we can get them organised without spending ages gathering different relatives.

Once those are done, everyone can get back to enjoying the celebrations.

What Happens if It Rains?

This is England, so it's always worth having a backup plan.

I've photographed weddings in rain, wind, cold weather and difficult lighting conditions, and it doesn't have to spoil the photography.

Sometimes we can wait for a break in the weather. Other times we'll use sheltered spots or take photographs indoors.

A rainy wedding day can still produce some fantastic natural images, and I'd much rather work with the conditions than force you to stand outside looking miserable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wedding Photography in Lichfield

Click a question to read the answer.

How much does a wedding photographer in Lichfield cost?

My wedding photography packages start at £350 for two hours. Half-day coverage is £650 for four hours, while full-day wedding photography starts at £1,150.

All packages include professionally edited photographs delivered through an online gallery.

The best package depends on your ceremony, reception and how much of the day you'd like photographed.

Do you photograph weddings at Lichfield Registry Office?

Yes. I've photographed numerous weddings at Lichfield Registration Office and know the surrounding area well.

It's one of my favourite locations for small weddings, particularly because there are lovely places for photographs nearby.

Are you based in Lichfield?

I'm based in Nottingham, but regularly travel to Lichfield and the surrounding area for weddings.

I've photographed weddings here before, and Lichfield falls within my usual photography coverage area.

Can we book you for just a small wedding ceremony?

Absolutely. My two-hour ceremony package is designed for exactly this kind of wedding.

It allows time for the ceremony, a selection of family photographs and relaxed portraits without having to book a full day.

Do you take traditional family wedding photographs?

Yes. Although my photography is primarily documentary, I'm always happy to organise the traditional family group photographs that are important to you.

I think these photographs are valuable, especially when everyone has come together for the occasion.

The difference is that I try to make the process quick and relaxed, so you can spend more time with your guests.

What if we're awkward in front of the camera?

That's completely normal, and you definitely won't be the first couple to tell me that.

I keep couple photographs relaxed, offer simple guidance and usually encourage you to walk and talk rather than stand in complicated poses.

You don't need any experience of being photographed.

How long will it take to receive our wedding photographs?

My usual delivery time is approximately four to six weeks.

You'll receive an online gallery containing your edited, high-resolution photographs, which you can download and share.

How far in advance should we book?

Once you've confirmed your wedding date and venue, it's worth getting in touch to check availability.

Some dates book up a long way in advance, particularly popular Saturdays, while smaller weekday weddings can sometimes be arranged with less notice.

There's no harm in asking, even if your wedding is coming up fairly soon.

How do we book you for our Lichfield wedding?

The first step is to get in touch with your wedding date, venue and a little information about your plans.

If I'm available, we can discuss which photography package would suit your wedding and answer any questions.

A £100 deposit secures the booking, with the remaining balance due two weeks before the wedding.
